Project Details:
This project is a comprehensive renovation and upgrade of the existing bus depot of the project company. The core challenge is to transform a parking lot into a fully electrified operational depot without affecting the normal overnight parking and operation of buses, and to deploy future-proof charging infrastructure. The project adopts phased construction, achieving “zero operational interruption.” The newly built medium-voltage power access point can provide up to 10 MW of power support for future fleet expansion. The charging system is equipped with intelligent scheduling, automatic vehicle identification, 24-hour monitoring, and safety facilities such as smoke detectors and emergency stop buttons to manage high-value vehicles and large-scale energy transmission. Given the coastal environment, all equipment has undergone special anti-salt spray corrosion and anti-condensation design.
Customer Pain Points:
Operational Continuity Challenges: How to ensure that the bus depot can continue to park and serve hundreds of buses every night without disrupting daily operations while upgrading infrastructure and deploying charging equipment.
Fleet Size and Power Planning: How to design and deploy power infrastructure sufficient to support overnight concentrated charging for the current and future growing electric bus fleet (targeting 100% sustainability), and ensure scalability for future capacity.
Need for Operational Simplification: Simplify the charging process for electric buses, reduce driver operational complexity, and improve overnight charging efficiency.
Adaptation to Harsh Environments: The depot is located near the ocean, posing risks of salt spray corrosion and condensation, requiring extremely high durability and reliability of charging equipment.
Safety and Management: Need for safe and reliable centralized monitoring and management of high-power charging processes, high-value assets (buses), and large-scale energy transfer.
Project Value:
Driving Zero-Emission Transition: Lays a solid physical foundation for the project company to achieve its medium-term goal of a “100% sustainable fleet,” marking a key step in the decarbonization strategy of public transport in the Barcelona metropolitan area.
Ensuring Operations and Future Expansion: Through a “build while operating” model and reserving up to 10 MW of power capacity, it ensures the continuity of current bus services while preparing for future large-scale electrification upgrades with a “plug-and-play” approach, protecting long-term investments.
Improving Efficiency and Reliability: The smart charging system optimizes power distribution to prevent overloads; automatic identification simplifies operations; the reinforced design for marine environments ensures long life and stable operation under harsh conditions, reducing maintenance costs.
Enhancing Safety and Management Capabilities: 24/7 monitoring and multiple safety measures provide security for large-scale, high-power nighttime charging operations, enabling centralized and visualized energy management.
Social and Environmental Benefits: Supports the company’s passenger service of over 52 million trips per year in transitioning to cleaner modes, significantly reducing carbon emissions and noise pollution from urban transport, and improving the quality and public image of public transport services.
