Project Information:
Latin America Medium-Voltage Microgrid Research Base

Project Scale:
205kW PV, 1MW 1.27MWh Energy Storage, 200kW Gas Power Generation
Project Overview:
As Brazil’s first medium-voltage (MV) microgrid research EPC project, it covers major campus facilities including teaching buildings, the gymnasium, the library, the conference center, the administration building, and EV bus charging stations. Fully integrated with solar PV, energy storage, and gas generators via an Energy Management System (EMS), the project enables seamless grid-tied and off-grid switching on the 10kV+ MV side. It supports advanced functions such as peak shaving, energy arbitrage, voltage and frequency regulation, and features a black-start capability for the MV grid using the BESS (Battery Energy Storage System). The project is expected to save the owner over 500,000 RMB (approximately 350,000 BRL) annually.

Project Value:
As an innovative research initiative in Brazil, this project deploys core microgrid technologies on a university campus to facilitate scientific research, delivering vital test data and driving industry standards for Brazilian microgrids—particularly regarding the grid integration of energy storage systems.
Through the deployment of distributed solar PV and energy storage systems, the project significantly reduces carbon emissions, enhances energy efficiency, and lowers energy expenditures. In doing so, it serves as an exemplary model for energy conservation and consumption reduction in Brazilian universities while fostering sustainable campus development.
Furthermore, as a landmark demonstration project in the Brazilian power sector, it highlights China’s technological edge in the microgrid field, fostering closer technology cooperation and exchange between China and Brazil in the power and energy industries.
The microgrid EMS integrates distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar PV, energy storage, and gas generators, enabling remote control over the 10kV+ medium-voltage PCC connected to the utility grid and loads. This architecture achieves black-start capabilities and seamless transitions between grid-tied and off-grid modes while facilitating flexible configuration and control for peak shaving, energy arbitrage, and voltage/frequency regulation.
