Hexing Electric Launches Medium-Voltage Microgrid Project to Power Nigerian Communities

2025/06/03

Hexing Electric and De-Janees Concepts Ltd have officially signed an agreement to jointly launch a 2 MW solar medium-voltage microgrid project in Saki, Oyo State, Nigeria, equipped with a 3 MWh energy storage system, with plans to expand to 10 MW in the future. Once completed, the project will provide at least 22 hours of clean and stable electricity daily, initially benefiting 4,000 households as well as schools, hospitals, gas stations, and other key institutions.

The implementation of this project demonstrates Hexing Electric’s commitment to providing clean energy solutions for communities and marks a significant milestone in its expansion into Africa’s renewable energy market.

Engr. Isaiah Fatokun, Managing Director and CEO of De-Janees Concepts Ltd, and Ye Wenjun, Vice President of Hexing Electric Group for Africa, attended the signing ceremony for the Saki microgrid project.

Addressing the Urgent Electricity Needs in the Saki Area

Saki is located in the Oke-Ogun region, consisting of 15 sub-communities with a population of over 500,000. Despite having more than 100 gas stations, large hotels with hundreds of rooms, multiple schools, and police stations, the area has long suffered from electricity shortages and unstable power supply.

The project will be implemented in three phases. The first phase will deliver 2 MW of solar power via the Sango feeder, supplying electricity to 4,000 households, with construction and operation scheduled to be completed by December 2025. Ultimately, the project will expand to 10 MW, with the potential for future upgrades to 30 MW, aiming to cover more communities currently without grid access.

At the signing ceremony, Engr. Isaiah Fatokun, Managing Director/CEO of De-Janees Concepts Ltd, stated that the project aligns with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Power Agenda,’ aiming to drive economic growth, revitalize local businesses, enhance education, and significantly improve the overall quality of life for residents of Saki.

Hexing Electric’s Full-Scenario Medium-Voltage Microgrid Solution

Hexing Electric’s Medium-Voltage Microgrid system is primarily designed for small grids with grid-connected voltage up to 40.5kV, integrating distributed photovoltaic systems, energy storage systems, coordinated control units, power loads, monitoring devices, and protection equipment into a unified intelligent management system. These components work together to form an integrated microgrid for generation, distribution, and consumption, achieving precise local energy balance.

In the Saki Medium-Voltage Microgrid project, Hexing Electric provided a full-scenario solution including photovoltaic modules, grid-tied inverters, energy storage systems, prefabricated substations, pole-mounted circuit breakers, and an intelligent energy management platform. The project adopts an 11kV grid-connected and off-grid hybrid architecture, featuring core functions such as multi-energy coordinated control, medium-voltage equipment integration, intelligent dispatch, and black start, ensuring stable and efficient operation even under weak grid conditions.

Key Equipment Components

The system adopts a hierarchical control architecture to achieve multi-energy coordinated control. At the local level, device-level PID control is implemented, such as PV MPPT tracking and battery SOC balancing; at the centralized level, the EMS provides intelligent full-scenario management of the microgrid, offering customized solutions to ensure optimal system operation and efficient service delivery.

Through this hierarchical optimization structure, Hexing Power’s medium-voltage microgrid system combines precise device-level control with intelligent system-level management, supporting seamless grid-connected and off-grid switching functions such as pre-synchronization, parallel closing, and anti-reverse power protection. This architecture significantly enhances renewable energy consumption capacity, providing solid technical support for building a safe, clean, and sustainable modern energy system.

Multiple Control Strategies

Project Development and Government Collaboration

The project is led by De-Janees Concepts Ltd, approved by the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and funded by the World Bank. The local distribution company, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), will provide access through existing distribution infrastructure.

Ye Wenjun, Vice President of Hexing Electric’s Africa Region, stated: “This cooperation is not only the delivery of our Medium-Voltage Microgrid solution, but also a concrete practice of Hexing Electric’s vision as a ‘Global Green Energy and Clean Water Solution Expert.’ We look forward to working with partners to light up Africa and bring light and hope to more people living in darkness.”

The project has now entered the execution phase, with civil engineering and equipment transportation progressing simultaneously. It is expected to achieve grid connection within the next ten months. Once completed, the project will significantly enhance energy security in the Saki community, promote local economic development, and improve residents’ quality of life.

Hexing Electric will continue to drive development through innovation, using green technology to light up every corner of the world that needs electricity.
